Sherman Kinney

Basketball Coach/Athletic Director - 2016 Inductee

  • Performed many roles at HW from 1962-1977.  Named the first Head Coach of H-W Boys’ Basketball and served as the first Athletic Director.  Also served as Head Coach for Football and Baseball and Physical Education teacher
     

  • Served as the MIAA Associate Director for 18 years – led a committee forming a Sportsmanship, Integrity and Ethics programming to govern high school athletics in Massachusetts
     

  • 1987 – Inducted into the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame

Sally Woodsom Anderson

Coach and Contributor - 2016 Inductee

  • A pioneer of women’s coaches and women’s athletic programs at H-W.

 

  • Over 26 years, coached Field Hockey, Girls’ Basketball and Girls’ Tennis as a mentor to female athletes.

 

  • Also served as a well respected Physical Education Teacher at H-W serving as a role model to all.

Steve Sawyer

Track/Cross Country Coach - 2016 Inductee

  • Starting at H-W in 1969, he has coached and continues to coach multiple sports

 

  • In 2007, earned Boys’ Eastern Massachusetts Coach of the Year honors from the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association

  • In 2014, earned Girls’ Eastern Massachusetts Coach of the Year honors from the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association

  • Set a national record with historic continuous dual meet winning streak with the Girls’ Cross Country team

Doug Hoak

Athlete/Basketball & Baseball Coach - 2016 Inductee

  • Coached the 1988 Varsity Baseball team to a Division II State Championship

 

  • Coached the 2014-2015 Varsity Boys’ Basketball team to an undefeated season and Division IV State Championship

 

  • In 2015, elected Division IV North Coach of the Year by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association

 

  • In 2015, inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame

 

  • A standout Basketball and Baseball player at H-W.  Led Basketball team to State Semi-Finals at the Boston Garden

Dan Kardaris

Football Coach & Athletic Director - 2018 Inductee

  • Served as HW Athletic Director, 1993-1999.

 

  • Served as HW Head Football Coach, 1985-1991

  •  A career record of 48-20-2. Never had a record below 0.500 in any season.

  • Won Cape Ann League in 1990.

Soccer and Softball Coach - 2018 Inductee

Cliff Mello

  • In 1966, began his teaching and coaching career in Chester, Vermont. In 1967, his Boys Soccer team won the Vermont State Championship.

 

  • In 1969, started teaching and coaching at HW. Played an instrumental role in starting Project Adventure and the Boys Varsity Soccer and Hockey programs. Coached Boys Soccer for 32 seasons. Also coached Varsity Baseball and Varsity Softball and served as Athletic Director at HW.

 

  • Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Coach of the Year; Multiple Cape Ann League Soccer Coach of the Year honors.

  • In 2002, received the Cape Ann League Elliot Roundy Distinguished Service Award.

Gelean "Bud" Campbell

Golf Coach - 2021 Inductee

  • In 1955, he started his career in secondary education at Topsfield High School. In 1972, he began his teaching and coaching career at Hamilton-Wenham, retiring from coaching in 1998.

 

  • Garnered Cape Ann League Golf Championships in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1982, 1989, and 1992.

 

  • Awarded Cape Ann League Golf Coach of the Year honors in 1983, 1989, and 1992.

 

  • Emphasized integrity and sportsmanship on and off the golf course.

Robert Weinhold

Wrestling/Football Coach & Athletic Director- 2023 Inductee

  • Served as varsity wrestling coach for 14 years

 

  • Long-time football coach, served as varsity coach for the Generals for 9 years

 

  • Never one to grandstand, after a win, he would simply say, “Kids played well.”

 

  • Served as the athletic director for several years

 

  • Always fair in his words and actions, he continually showed how much he cared for all those around him, serving as a great mentor to his players, coaches, and fellow teachers

Richard Butterworth

Basketball Coach - 2023 Inductee

  • Coached the varsity boys basketball team for 19 years, qualifying for the state tournament in 17 of the 19 seasons

 

  • Coached basketball team to 4 CAL championships.

 

  • Holds the record for most wins by a basketball coach at HW

 

  • Served as an assistant coach and pitching coach for the baseball team for 14 years

 

  • Taught elementary and middle school physical education for the district for 35 years

Contributor- 2021 Inductee

  • As a member of the Massachusetts Track and Field Officials Association, he has served as a track and field official for many decades.

 

  • Has served as a scorekeeper/timekeeper for field hockey, football, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls soccer for many decades.

 

  • Helped students and advisors prepare the concession stand for school athletic events for many decades.

 

  • Has been a quiet but noticed supporter of high school athletes and athletics during his entire teaching career as well as in retirement.

Norman Swanson

Harold Simpson

Contributor- 2023 Inductee

  • As a member of the Massachusetts Track and Field Officials Association, he has served as a track and field official for many decades.

 

  • Served as a scorekeeper/timekeeper for field hockey, football, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls soccer for many decades.

 

  • A lifetime of dedicated service and significant contributions to HW athletics since the school’s inception in 1962

  • For over 40 years, served at the scorer’s table for football, soccer, and basketball games, as a starter and official for track meets, and attended thousands of games
